Goroka Show

Goroka Show, the oldest and largest Cultural Festival of Papua New Guinea has attracted many visitors this year. More than 80 tribes participated in the show during the independence weekend - 17,18 & 19 Sep 2010. For those visited, thank you for visiting the most colorful even of the country, and for those missed it this year, it is not too early to book 2011 show, as accommodation is easily booked out during the show weekend.

On 16th September 1975, Australian flag was replaced by a new flag of a newly-born country, Independent state of Papua New Guinea. This year marks 35 years of its independence.
People who normally don't think about the country become very patriotic for this moment, national flags all over the places, people wearing PNG flag-designed shirts, caps and dresses. Celebrations going in the capital Port Moresby and other parts of the country.

Life on the river - Sepik

Sepik River is one of the greatest eco-systems in the world and usually referred as "Amazon in the Asia-Pacific". Apart from its vast rain forest, rich marine and bird life, what makes it more interesting is the people & its culture along the river.

Because of its remoteness, western influence is very much limited and even all the tribes have been Christianized, people still keep their traditional customs and beliefs.

Life on the river has changed very little for centuries; people cultivate land and get harvest, catch fish - still living along with the mother nature.

Sepik River Canoe Safari is to see and experience the river people's life from their level, not from luxurious tourist boat or 5 star accommodation, but stay in the village hut, feel the nature and real culture of the Sepik river and its people.

Thoughts for Independence

This is already September.....Christmas is almost coming and we are getting older !!
But before that, Papua New Guineans celebrate independence day on 16th Sep.
Papua New Guinea will be 35 years old, if it is human, graduated from schools, hopefully get married, and have certain position in the society....maybe.

Papua New Guinea is blessed with natural resources, gold, copper, oil, gas in the ground, Marine resources like Tuna, Timber and so on....
But I believe that real resources of the country is human being.

Without developing human resources properly, the country's wealth will be deprived by foreigners/politicians and nothing will be left for the future generations.

Education of children is vital for Papua New Guinea to be truly independent and walk on its feet, rather than being controlled by greedy outsiders even 35 years after independence.

Future of the country is on the shoulder of our children.

Mt Hagen Cultural Show

Mt Hagen Cultural Show, or widely known as "Hagen Show" was held over the last weekend.

Colourful tribes got together and competed each other to be the best cultural groups.

There were lots of Tourists from around the world came to see the annual festival.

Between the Tradition and Development

The city of Port Moresby is changing very fast. Lots of New Hotels, Apartment Houses, Shopping Centres and Office Buildings are being built under the name of Development.
Here you can see the new Harbor City Development site, with new ANZ bank headquarter, New Executive Apartment and land reclamation site for further construction.
Right at back of it is Hanuabada village of Motuan people; life not much changed for hundreds of years since they have built the village on the water after migrating from other pacific islands.
It is a clear contrast of tradition and Development facing each other.
Everybody wishes for a comfortable modern life but if you believe in development and chase for it, you will lose your identity forever. Papua New Guinea is one of the last countries in the world which still keeps its own identity but it may have gone very soon....
Nobody knows where this country is heading for.

Miss PNG Contest

Miss PNG Crowning Night was held over the last weekend in Port Moresby.

The Event is organized by the Red-Cross Society and thus the charity side of the event is more emphasized than ordinary beauty contests.

The traditional part is unique for Papua New Guinea; each contestant dressed up in their tribal costume and being asked about the knowledge of their indigenous culture.

The Title of 2010 Miss PNG went to Ms James from New Ireland Province.

Unlike some other developed country, Miss PNG contest is still one of the biggest annual events of the country in Papua New Guinea.

National Mask Fetival 2010

16th National Mask Festival was held in Kokopo, East New Britain Province from 14-17JUL 2010. As usual, the event was opened up by the beat of Kundu Drum from the shore in the dawn by Tolai's Kinavai ceremony.

Lots of tourists visited the festival, including USA, Germany, French, Japan, Australia etc.. and enjoyed the indigenous mask culture of Papua New Guinea.

Body Paint

Body Paint is important for Traditional Dance in Papua New Guinea.
Different color is used in different cultures/tribes, such as Red, Brown, Yellow, Black, White etc....
Here in Madang, Body is painted with Red color before being decorated by leaves and feathers.

This is the secret of the red color. The fruit is smashed and red juice inside is used to paint the body, then rub the oil to make the body shiny.

Baby boy was looking at how elders are being painted and he started painting himself.
Yes, I am also a boy and need to dress up !!

German vs England

World Cup match between German and England on Sunday ended with historical win for Germans and left a question about introducing the Video Referee. Video ref does not deny the human referee but helps to make a fair decision in a crucial moment, and it has proven very helpful in Rugby. FIFA should seriously consider it.
However, even the goal was admitted, the score would have been 2-4, so Capello should accept the defeat. - Simply Germany was too good for England this time.

Papua New Guinea was colonized by UK & Germans in November 1884 and for us, the game was between former colonial masters. Although Germans officially withdrew after World War 1 defeat, we have lots of German remains, including names like Bismark Sea, Mt Wilhelm, New Hanover, Alexishafen, Finschhafen, to name a few.

Congratulations for Germany and keep going for the World Cup !!

Reef & Rainforest

Papua New Guinea is where Tropical Reforests meet with Coral Reefs.
Coral Reef is mother for all kinds of fish & marine life, while Reforest provides food & shelter for insects, birds, reptiles and mammals alike.

Local people are fishing on a dugout canoe, just enough for their family to eat for the day.
Very peaceful....
Due to the western influence, life is changing dramatically here but many people still live on the gift of "mother nature".

Future for PNG Football

Soccer World Cup is around the corner.

While Papua New Guinea is not doing well in the FIFA ranking -ranked 202 ----last on the list !! - at Club level, PNG's Hekari United won the Oceanic Club Cup Championship recently. (See Oceania Football Website for more detail.) Congratulations for Hekari !!

At Junior level, inter-school football match is going on in Port Moresby.

During the colonial era, Football was brought by Germans to New Guinea. After the change of colonial master, Rugby League is the most popular sport across the nation.
But there are lots of young kids playing football these days. By the time these kids become senor level, PNG may be going for World Cup -- who knows ??

Parasitic Plants

Parasitic Plants are type of plants that lives on other plants.

Here in tropical climate, we can see a lot of parasitic plants on the trunk or branch of a large tree. It is amazing how different plants live together under a "house" of usually larger "Host Plant".The photo was taken at NCD Botanical Garden in Port Moresby.

By the way, I thought that Orchids were also parasitic.
But, according to the expert, none of the orchids are parasitic.
"In nature, many orchids cling to trees and bushes as a growth habit; but they take nothing from the host plant and do not injure it in any way. Orchids that can grow on trees are called epiphytes or, more commonly, air plants" ---- from website of "Orchid House"

Unusual Tour Guide

Another story from Madang. While we visited Haya village, baby Cassowary came around. As we walked around the village, he walked ahead of us like a Tour Guide, almost everywhere. - Unusual Tour Guide !
But later I found that he was not guiding us, but made sure that we did not invade his land or spoil his area.... He was actually on Patrol !!
I know Cassowary is very "territorial", but I couldn't imagine that this small bird claimed the whole village as his yard and suspect the new visitor like a criminal.........

Cassowary is very important bird, pet, or domestic "animal" in the traditional village society of Papua New Guinea. Although it maybe not be as important as Pig, it has certain prestige in the society and it is no doubt the "King of the birds" in Papua New Guinea.

Divine Word University Tourism Expo

The main reason to visit Madang this time was to attend "LIKLIK DIWAI TURISM EXPO", - the tourism exhibition by Tourism & Hospitality Management (THM) students by Divine Word University, Madang.
As a Tourism Promotion Authority officer at that time, I remember the discussion to establish Diploma course of THM at Divine Word Institute (later became University) back in 1995.
Now I am very glad to see that the course is well-established and have been providing resource persons to the Tourism industry in PNG.
Congratulations for the students & teachers involved for the success of Expo and once again, "Tenkiu Tru" for inviting me to this great event !!

Visit Amele villages outside Madang

Have visited Amele villages on the South coast of Madang.
After a short trip by 4WD, we have arrived in a beautiful Haya village.
After dropping off food stuff for our dinner, we have visited Hobe village where beautiful flower garden setup is made. Pomelo (a kind of orange) was so juicy and tasty especially after a walk in a tropical garden.

The sunset view from Suyao Lookout was amazing... On a clear day, you could see Mt Wilhelm and Sepik Plain stretching all the way to West Papua.

Amale villages (Haya, Hobe, Suyao) can be visited as an extended half day trip out of Madang town, but for those looking for a real PNG experience, village home stay at Haya village, with early morning jungle walk would make your visit much more interesting...

New Service Started

Air Niugini has commenced its Second Port Moresby-Narita flight from 31st March.
This will make connection from Japan, North Asia, Europe & USA much easier than before.

QANTAS will be back in Papua New Guinea

QANTAS will be back in Papua New Guinea after almost 8 years.

Local papers this week revealed that QANTAS has already submitted an application for 12 x weekly services between Cairns & Port Moresby starting July 2010.

This reflects the economic growth and recent resource industry boom in Papua New Guinea, but it will surely have a positive impact on Tourism sector as well.
It will be a challenge for local airlines, but we hope this will lift the overall service up to a world standard level, and become a Win-Win situation for everybody.

Back home in PNG

Finally we are back home in Papua New Guinea.
As the airplane was approaching Jackson International Airport, Port Moresby, we saw the the ever-green landscape & reef-fringed blue ocean.
We normally complain about the heat & humid, but for now, the warm sunshine is comfortable for the body after spending sometime in ice-covered land.
The words came out naturally - "Thanks God, we are back in Paradise..."

It is funny we always admire sophisticated & efficient society in "developed" countries, but when we come back to Papua New Guinea, we always feel healed from inside. It is difficult to express in words, but Papua New Guinea has something special, for sure.

As soon as we were back, we ate Kaukau (sweet potato), Banana and chicken cooked with coconut milk. Although I like Eisbein & Pilsner, nothing is better than home food with SP Beer !

In Praha

On the next day, we became tourists in the historical township.

There should be a sign of spring by now, but we had big snow fall on Sunday - Freezing !!

Asaro Mudman is not a superman - ITB

"Asaro Mudman" is a popular figure at ITB Berlin. As he stands at Papua New Guinea booth, many people gather to get his photos, or even try to touch him.
Everybody expects him to stand whole day, but he needs a rest, since Asaro Mudman is not a "superman". If you really want to know who he is, please come to Papua New Guinea and visit Mudman in his Asaro village outside of Goroka.

LNG project

No single day passes without hearing about "LNG Project" in Papua New Guinea these days.

It is US$15 Billion project joint venture led by Exxon Mobil to commercialize the gas reserve in Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea and connect it via Pipeline to the plant near Port Moresby. The gas will be cooled there to its liquid state at very cold temperature - "minus 160 Celsius" and shipped out overseas for export.

From politicians, businessmen to local villagers, everybody is talking about LNG Project which is said to bring economy up and thus to improve the life of every Papua New Guinean.

Well, I also wish it would happen, but at the same time would not be surprised if things get worse or nothing good would happen.

Clear example is everywhere - 20 Years of Oil export did not have positive economic impact for the majority of the Southern Highlanders, and what Gold production has changed the life of Western Province people or Misima island people ?

I don't want to see another Bougainville crisis - a civil war originated from world class Copper mine. I wish fair and transparent government will share the benefit of the LNG project via improved service delivery system.

Only Historian of the future generation would tell if LNG project was the right answer for PNG.

Bit of Science - Ornithoptera Priamus

"Ornithoptera priamus" is a common species of Birdwing Butterfly which lives from New Guinea Islands to Solomon Islands to the East.

We normally find Green-coloured male in mainland New Guinea.

On our last visit to Mioko Island. we have found the Blue-colored species, not knowing that it was one of the unique examples of Darwin's Theory of Evolution.

The Butterfly changes color from Golden-orange in the West Papua to Green in Eastern Half of New Guinea, and change to Blue/Green at this small Mioko Island. Further to the East at Bougainville and Solomon Islands, Blue dominates.

Just as culture is diverse and some 800 different languages are spoken, nature is also very much diverse and different in each islands here; After 15 years of living in this place, I am still amazed at the "Nature's Wonder".

Farewelled the "Kopex" town

After an overnight trip to Duke of York Islands, we are back at Kokopo.
This was the last day at East New Britain and we strolled around the town.

When I first visited here in 1995, there was few permanent buildings. No Kokopo Beach Bungalow, No Rapopo plantation; ANZ bank was operating from barrack-type house.
Now it is one of the fastest growing towns of South Pacific - it has many new permanent buildings, big shops, warehouses, as well as historical buildings - one of the oldest Catholic Churches in Papua New Guinea, Modern History Museum .....
Kokopo Market was very busy with people selling and buying the food, cloth, basket etc...
Unlike other big towns in Papua New Guinea, people mind their own business and very safe.
We wish Port Moresby is safe like East New Britain ....
After several days of re-discovering Rabaul & Kokopo, we reluctantly left the "Kopex" town.

Vunapope = "place of the Pope" is one of the oldest catholic missions in Papua New Guinea .
The cathedral has been refurbished recently.

Duke of York Island Adventure

On the next day, we have set sailed for Duke of York Islands. Duke of York Islands are group of 13 islands lie between New Britain & New Ireland on the St. George's Channel.

Today's main destination was Mioko Island, some 45 minutes boat ride from Kokopo. After we left our bags, we have departed again for snorkeling, and then fishing on the way. Not long, Dominic has caught a big Barracuda !!

After the marine activities, we have done a nature walk from the tip of the island to the Guest House. Mioko Island is where Queen Emma has set up her first plantation in 1878 and remains of her resident & Pool can still be seen in the jungle. (Photo below: remain of Queen Emma's swimming pool)

The flat walk can be done by any age group, and is full of attraction, history, tropical flowers, houses and curious local people etc...

The village life is very simple, people don't have anything luxurious yet have everything to live.

The trip was adventurous, heart-warming & educational.

Duke of York can be visited as a day trip if you want a modern comfort & hot shower, but if you really want to feel the village life and its hospitality, it is worth visiting by a overnight trip.

The next day, sea was very calm. When we are leaving the Duke of York, dolphins were chasing the boat and jumping as if they are saying "Goodbye and please come again !!"

Village Tour our of Kokopo

We have visited a village called Menebonbon outside of Kokopo.

The village is 45 minuets away from kokopo on the hill side towards the tip of Gazelle Peninsula and have living with substitant agriculture with Copra/Cacao as cash crop.

When we visited, villagers were busy cutting the Copra (dried Coconut). The cut Copra is dried in an oven in the village and later sold to the Copra factory in town before being exported to overseas.

After the "factory inspection", we have moved to a nearby house. The ladies were already preparing the today's lunch called "Aigir."

Aigir is traditional dish in Rabaul area and it is similar to the "Mumu" in a way that they use heated stone for steaming the food, but it is unique in its own way and ingredients.

The biggest difference from Highlands "Mumu" is Aigir use full of Coconut Milk.

Heated stones are placed on top of the Banana leaves and coconut milk is boiling up.

Then you add Taro, Chicken, Aibika, etc... and cover it up with the Banana leaves.

After 30 minutes or so, delicious Aigir is done !!

Sweet taste of Coconut milk is absorbed in all the ingredients and all I could say was "Oh, its beautiful !"

The village is situated on the hill looking down Warangoi Bay (on the other side on Tokua Airport) and blessed with nature. When I carefully look around, I could see Avocado, Paw paw, Cacao, Star Fruit, Coconut... everything was there.

Village visit experience is something you should not miss in Papua New Guinea,　and I can say that Menebonbon is one of the "secret treasures" of Rabaul/Kokopo.

Rabaul - Volcano Town

Rabaul was once called "the most beautiful towns in the South Pacific", until 1994 when the twin volcanic eruption ruined the entire town.

Since then, Government & Business Houses moved to Kokopo and no new building has been built in Rabaul. Most of the existing buddings have been collapsed because of the ash and subsequent effect of acid.

Rabaul township was first developed by the Germans. German Flag was raised at Matupit Island on 3rd Nov 1884, but the capital was in Kokopo. After they found that Kokopo does not have deep port to cater for a big ship, they have developed a new town with the big harbor - Simpsons harbor and named the town "Simpsonshafen".

Simpsonshafen was renamed as Rabaul after Germans have defeated the World War 1, but the town kept developing as main export town of Copra.

The Town was ruined by 1937 eruption which killed more than 500 people at nearby Matupit island and again by the World War 2.

But people who loved the "Frangipani" town came back and rebuilt the Rabaul.

With the mighty power of the mother nature, we are not sure if Rabaul will come back again to its beauty or not. However, with people still love the town and work hard to rebuild the town, I am sure there will be a hope.

Trip to Rabaul No.1

I have visited Rabaul last week.
Staying at comfortable Kokopo Beach Bungalow, I have visited Volcano town, Remains of German Colonial time and Japanese War Relics, and very nice villages on Mainland and Island.

Enjoyed the safe Town, comfortable Hotel, tasty Food & hospitable People.
I will post the trip report in next couple of days... should not be missed !!

New Restaurant Open at Gateway Hotel

Season for Flower

Port Moresby is starting to rain these days, and becoming greener and greener.
Colourful flowers have good contract with the green back ground and decorate the town with Red & Yellow. This is the start of flower season in Papua New Guinea.

Home-grown Aibika for Dinner

Yesterday, we have harvested the Aibika leaves from our home garden.

Some of you have never heard "Aibika". It is a green leafy vegetable common in South Pacific countries. It goes very well with chicken & other meat and a "Must" ingredients for coastal people of Papua New Guinea.
I did not know that Aibika flower looks like Hibiscus, because nobody awaits here until the plant is flowering - harvest and eat before the flower blossoms.

We cooked the Aibika with pumpkin & chicken for a Dinner.

If you are next time in Papua New Guinea, don't forget to eat Aibika.

Visit Team Eastern Highlands

Yesterday we have visited Team Eastern Highlands at Taurama Primary School outside Port Moresby and donated Rice Bags, Chicken & other food stuff on behalf of Goroka Trek & Tours.
They are here to participate in the 4th PNG National Games and are cooking their own food while staying at school dormitory.
The donation was a big surprise but much appreciated by the team members. - Hope it has filled up everybody's stomach.
Team Eastern Highlands are currently at 3rd Place after NCD & Morobe Province.

Highlands Highway Overland Tour

Highlands Highway, or Okuk Highway is definitely the nation's lifeline.
Main Export products like Gold, Tea, Coffee are transported to coastal town of Lae & Madang for export, and imported consumer goods go up the Highway.
Here is the virtual tour of Highlands Highway from Mt Hagen to Lae.

Mt Hagen at altitude of 1600m is a commercial centre in the Highlands Region.
Outside the Mt Hagen, you can see a large Tea plantation on the road side.
You will then pass the limestone country of Chimbu Province and arrive Goroka, Coffee capital of Papua New Guinea.

The Road will wind down the valley to lowland, through grassland country of Eastern Highlands.

On the way, you will encounter a breathtaking view of Yonki Hydro Dam. The Dam supplies most of the electricity in Highlands, Madang & Lae.

Further going down the mountain, you will reach Markham Valley outside of Lae.
The temperature dramatically changes from freezing 10 degree to "sweating" 30+ degree .

Travelling the Highland Highway is not as comfortable as you drive the highway in other countries. However, if you have a bit of adventurous mind, it is worth taking as you can enjoy different scenery, plants, people and culture.

Tree Kangaroo

One of the most unique, and cutest animals in Papua New Guinea is Tree Kangaroo.
As the name tells itself, it is a family member of Kangaroo, Wallaby & Koala in Australia - Marsupials. It doesn't hop much as Kangaroo & Wallaby, but is a very good tree climber.

Local people hunt the animal and eat the meat for thousand of years - many say the meat is "sweet" but I have never tried it yet...
There was sound population of Tree Kangaroo across the country, however, dramatic increase of human population and cutting down of the forest has been a great threat to the tree kangaroo these days. Kundu & Kanu Festival, Bigger & Better

Kundu & Kanu Festival was held in Alotau over the last weekend (6,7 & 8 Nov).

People from all over the Milne Bay province, other provinces & overseas flocked into the normally quiet town of Alotau and witnessed the cultural festival.

Kanu (=Canoe in Tokpisin) has been a main transportation in the Milne Bay where more than 600 islands are scattered around.The larger canoe was used for the "Kula Trade", traditional barter system involving circle of islands.
Even now, people use the canoe for going to school, church, fishing and carrying the garden crop
for sale. Canoe is still one of the lifeline in Milne Bay and rest of maritime provinces in Papua New Guinea.

Underwater Jungle

Papua New Guinea has Forest everywhere, from Lowland Tropical Jungle to "Cloud Forest" in the Highlands. But it is not only found on Land.
If you go for snorkeling or scuba diving, you can also enjoy the "Underwater Forest."
The coral reefs are so healthy and attract thousands of colorful reef fish.
Diving & Snorkel ling are available in different locations all year round, namely in Alotau, Kavieng, Kimbe bay, Madang, Port Moresby, Rabaul & Tufi.

Welcoming Orchid

This is another orchid I have seen at the nursery of the National Capital Botanical Garden recently. I reckon it is Dendrobium species, but not sure about the name...
What made me interested was that the flower looks like a "person is bowing down for the visitor, with hands open to hug you." So I decided to call it ""Welcoming orchid." - sorry if there is any other common name already exists !!
There are more than 3,000 species of orchid in Papua New Guinea, which accounts for more than 2/3rd of all the orchids in the world, and they are waiting to "Welcome" your visit.

Jelly Bean or Passion Fruit ?

The other day, I have found a funny-shaped orchid - Dendrobium smilliae - in the botanical garden. Well, this orchid was "found" in 19th century, so it is not "new" spices but the shape of the flower is very unique compared to other orchids.
For me, the seeds resembles like the inside of a tropical fruit so I named it "Passion Fruit Orchid".

However later, I found that it is called "Jelly Bean Orchid" by village children.

I have looked at pictures but I still support my idea of "Passion Fruit Orchid"......
What do you think ??

Cancellation of 49th Morobe Show

It is regretted that due to cholera outbreak, this year's Morobe show which was scheduled for 31st Oct & 1st Nov is now cancelled.

With the support of many business houses in the province, Morobe Show has been one of the most successful shows in the country, and as far as I know, it has never been cancelled in its long history since 1959.

It affects many tourists who have booked the tour for a long time but the decison was made due to the health concern and we asked understaning of the guests.

Show will definetely come back in 2010, on 23rd & 24th OCT.

Tsunami panic

After huge earthquakes hit Vanuatu islands yesterday morning (local time), Tsunami alert was sent across the pacific island countries including Papua New Guinea.

Being our memory still fresh after Samoa Tsunami disaster in late September, people are rushing out of downtown Port Moresby for higher area.

I was in a meeting in one office in downtown and around 1040hrs, I was told to vacate the building because of Tsunami alert, some even saying that Tsunami has already hit neighbouring Solomon Islands and on its way to PNG !!

Later I came back to office to find out that there was no Tsunami, and the alert was cancelled at 1018hrs, some minutes before I was told to vacate the building.

Most of the offices, including Banks and schools were closed for the day, even after the Tsunami alert was cancelled as most of the staff has gone home and never returned....

Goroka show has finished with huge success this year.
This was not possible without the support of the business houses, goverment body and individulas who tried to support the show from their heart.

Earthquake in Samoa

Huge Earthquake measuring Richter scale 8.3 hit Pacific Island of Samoa and surrounding area on Wednesday morning. Papua New Guinea, at far west end of the Pacific was not affected, but as a Pacific Island neighbour, we are very much worried about the people who have been affected.

Nature's wonder at Sialum

You have never heard of Sialum (or Bobongara) at the North Coast of Huon Peninsula of Morobe Province, but the name is archaeologically very well-known for its "terrace" landscape which has risen up every year.

You can find the fossil of fish & shell at the top of the mountain.
Large waisted blade artifacts dating to 38,000 years ago have been excavated at the Bobongara, making it the oldest human habitation site in the South West Pacific.

The area is nominated for World heritage listing and may be the next World Heritage from Papua New Guinea after Kuk in Western Highlands.

Wewak Airport Maintenance Completed

After a long period of maintenance work, Wewak airport is reopen for bigger aircraft.Now Wewak airport can cater for Fokker 100 aircrafts (100 seats) and direct from/to Port Moresby.

It is a releif for travelling public, including residents, business community & tourits who have been much affected by the limited seats by 36 seater aircraft.

Wewak is the gateway for mighty Sepik River, cultural treasure of Papua New Guinea.

Goroka show will go on despite....

Less than a month ago, Goroka Chamber of Commerce who has been in charge of the famous Goroka show for last 5 years has suddenly walked out and tried to cancel the famous Goroka show.
However, Air Niugini, Bird of Paradise Hotel, Pacific Gardens Hotel, Goroka Trek & Tours and other stake holders came in and told the "old boys", "OK, if you can't run the show, please vacate so that we can run it."

Even though it was a start from the scratch without assurance of the funds, we believed in the old saying "where there is a will, there is a way."

With the limited funds, the committee has purchased the laminating machine and making thousands of show tickets by hands with the help of the volunteers.

Eventually Corporate sponsors have responded for the appeal by the New committee and assisted with funding.

The show can not be cancelled by the people who don't have a heart for Goroka and the show.

The show is the pride of Goroka, Eastern Highlands and Papua New Guinea.

The show will go on.

Rabaul - Simpsonshafen

Rabaul, the provincial capital of East New Britain Province of Papua New Guinea is once called "Simpsonshafen" in German New Guinea time. It was shriving business centre by the early settlers including famous Emma Core - "Queen Emma".

The town has been devastated by the 1937 & 1994 volcanic eruptions & World War 2.
However, people who love the "Frangipani town" has come back and rebuilt the town.

With its unique culture tradition such as as Tubuan (by Tolai) & Fire Dance (by Baining), colonial & war history and natural beauty represented by the volcano, it is one of the major tourist destinations in Papua New Guinea.

Young Theresa was among the Dancers when German TV crew visited Gaire village outside of Port Moresby. She got an instant tattoo on her body & face painted, dressed up in Grass skirt with shell necklaces, and swang her body to the rhythm of the Kundu Drum.
While Western influence is coming to the villages, she learns how to dance at young age and tradition will be passed onto next generations.... Yes, Traditions must go on !

Family trip to Loloata

Off course there are problems from time to time, just like any other big cities in the world, whether be London, New York, Amsterdam or Paris. But we are living here, going to work and shopping, kids going to school, and on holiday, visiting place like Loloata Island for a relaxisation & fun.

Ready for Snorkeling at "Lion Island"

Afternoon walking up the hill (Loloata means "One Hill" in local Motuan language) to the end of the island until we see "Danger" sign.

After a tiring day, Dinner time !!

Loloata island is located in the middle of great coral reefs, where many scuba divers come from all over the world, but is a place for fun for local residents as well.

Remember the past for the future

23rd July is Remembrance Day in Papua New Guinea, when we remember the people who have devoted their lives for the country, especially during the World War 2 (even Papua New Guinea did not exited at that time).
We can still see the scars of War which ended 64 years ago through the wrecks and remains.
The Photo is the Japanese Bomber (NAKAJIMA 49i "Donryu") sitting down at Alexishafen outside Madang.

We are probably the last generation who knows the cruelness and helplessness of the War, and thus it is our responsibility to tell the future generation not to repeat it again.

Amazing Farmers

Highlands people of New Guinea Island are believed to be the first organized farmers in the world, starting drain-equipped gardens more than 9,000 years ago.

They did not, however, formed a country or did not develop modern technology on top of that advantage. Maybe they were happy as they were so they did not have to look for a better life...

Today, Highlanders of Papua New Guinea are known as amazing farmers, making gardens on the hill side of very steep mountains, some climb up to more than 3,000 meters.

The photo was taken from Daulo Pass, border of Eastern Highlands & Simbu Province on the Highlands Highway at altitude of almost 2,500 meters.

This is where people make Sweet Potato, Cabbage, Carrot, Tomato, Broccoli, and all kinds of vegetables you can imagine.

The fertile soil of Highlands and amazing gardening are supporting the livelihood of 6 million population of the country.

National Mask Festival on again

National Mask festival will be staged in Kokopo, East New Britain from 15th Jul 2009.

This is one of the most unique Festivals in Papua New Guinea with different mask culture of the country, especially in New Guinea Islands Region get together.

When I visited Sepik River earlier this year, Middle Sepik dancers from Palimbe village- "Mai Mask" - were planning to visit all the way to Kokopo to participate in the Festival. It will be interesting if Sepik & Tolai Mask collaborate and dance together.

One of the main attractions of the Festival, apart from stunning Fire Dance Performance by Baining Tribe is the Kinavai Ceremony by Tolais, main ethnic group of Rabaul/Kokopo.

When the sun rises, Group of cone-shaped spirit figure called "Tubuan" are emerging from the sea. This will be followed by series of sacred ceremonies; Tubuans sit down in line and are whipped by the tabu (shell money), and the ceremony goes on... The real meaning of the ceremonies can not be disclosed outside the secret society members.....

What makes me more interested is that East New Britain , with early contact with European settlers, is one of the most civilized provinces in the country, yet those highly educated people still believe in the secret society and keep the tradition.

Real "Paradise" for Nature

The word "Paradise" is often used to express Papua New Guinea, but I think sometimes the meaning of the "Paradise "is misinterpreted.

There is no well-maintained walking track to see "Bird of Paradise". There is no Aquarium to see the underwater world easily without hustle & bustle of carrying tank and odd equipment.

When I am walking in the jungle to see the rare species of birds, sweating and getting dirty, I sometimes question myself, is it a Paradise ??

However, as for the nature, much of the them are protected without being disturbed.

Coral Reefs are intact & healthy, much of the Rainforest remains and become breeding ground for many species of animals, plants & insects.

And when I finally encounter the rare spieces and find out that they enjoy the life without human disturbance, I also feel that, "Yes, this is the Real Paradise on Earth."

So the real meaning of "Paradise" in PNG should be something like that---- Papua New Guinea is one of the last Paradise on earth where human being and nature still live in harmony.

Sudden change of Flight schedule

Air Niugini has announced its New schedule on 23rd Jun, and effective on 02Jul, only less-than -10 days notice, in the middle of tourist season.

It is almost impssoible to connect any destination in the morning because of the late arrival of Internatioanal flights, and the reason is because of the bad weather & morning fog ???

Many tourists have to change their itinerary, tours & hotels with very short notice......

While Air Niugini has its operational reasons (if not political reasons) , more consideration should have given to the international tourists who are affected by a very short notice.

Is there any way to do such a drastic change with ample notice, and maybe early in the year so that peak tourist season - with Summer Holidaymaker from North hemisphere & Winter Holiday Tourist from Down South - are less affected with sudden changes ??

Weed in Papua New Guinea

When we order flower, beautiful and rare orchids are used in many occasions.

One day, I asked "Why do you use such an expensive flower ?"

The answer was "Oh, they are many of them in here, so for us, they are no difference from weeds." While Orchids are sold as expensive exotic flowers in many countries, they are sometimes regarded as "weeds" here in Papua New Guinea !!Papua New Guinea has more than 3,000 spices of Orchid, which accounts for more than 60% of all the orchid species in the world.

PAU Birding site - Port Moresby

PAU is one of the Universities in Papua New Guinea run by Adventist Church, but is also known as a Birdwatcher's heaven outside of Port Moresby.

With its peaceful environment, birds enjoy their life without being killed or chased away. There are lots of waterbirds, including endemic species as well as migrant species, all the way from Alaska, on the way to Australia and Antarctica maybe.

Photographed are common species, Pied Heron, Purple Swamphen & Wandering Ducks.

Other species frequent in the area are Comb-Crested Jacana, Spotted Whistling Duck, Pacific Black Duck, Rufous Night Heron, Egrets & Cormorants, Masked Lapwing, Sacred Kingfisher, etc...

My favorite is giant Papuan Frog Mouth, most of the time camoflouged and sleep on one of the trees.

On my last visit to Porebada village outside of Port Moresby, we have made a surprise visit to Bubu (Grandmother) Morea. After the visit, we have realized that the tape has been damaged and we have decided to visit her again in the afternoon.

Maybe she was not happy in the morning because she was not prepared to be in the film.

On our second visit in the afternoon, she had a shower and changed to a new meri-brouse to be on a film. Look at the nice smile ! Yes, you are never too old to look for a new ..... ?

Craft Market

Ela Beach Craft Market is held on last Saturdays of the months (Feb-Nov). It was originally started for the expatriate residents of Port Moresby using the school yard of the International School. There is no market in Dec & Jan, because many expatriate residents go home for Christmas, and also the school is closed during the period.

There are lots of tribal arts & crafts for sale in a safe environment, where tourists/expatiate residents negotiate for a better deal with the local seller.

Traditional Sing Sing performance is regularly organized.

This is one of the Port Moresby's best tourist attractions, and if you happen to be here on last Saturday of the month, it is worth visiting.

Tribal Festival Season to come soon

Tribal Festival Season is starting soon in Papua New Guinea; the major ones are

Mask Festival (July), Mt Hagen show (August), Goroka Show (September), Morobe Show (October) and Kundu & Kanu Festivals (November).

Off course there are other festivals in the country which are less promoted than the above major ones. This does not mean that they are less interesting, but they may not be promoted because the show dates are unreliable, or due to communication difficulty, they are not known to the outside world, etc... The culture is still intact in Papua New Guinea but has been changing bit by bit. Some traditions are dying away and you may not see some of the traditions next year.

If you have not booked this year's festival, there are several Festival tours still open for booking.

Landmark ? Pinapple Building

In September 1975, Port Moresby became capital city of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea. New government buildings were constructed at Waigani area to house government departments, including a spectacular National Parliament Building, which was opened in 1984 by Prince Charles of United Kingdom. Other important national buildings such as Supreme Court, National Museum, National Library are also located in the same area. Before those government buildings were constructed - according to the early settlers to Port Moresby - Waigani area was grassland all over and many wallabies were seen hopping around.

Among the buildings, there is a strange-shaped building opposite Sir John Guise Stadium.

This was originally one of the government buildings called "Marea Haus", but now everybody calls it as the "Pineapple Building" because of its shape resembles the tropical fruit.

Pineapple building has been long abandoned but become one of the landmark in Port Moresby, just like the "Leaning Tower of Pisa". Don't you think that "Pisa" & "Pineapple" are also look alike ??

Round-the-World Journalists from Germany

We had a surprise visit by young travel journalists from Germany.

Felix & Christina were on their 5 months Round-the-World trip, getting reports from different parts of the world to post them on the Travel page of F.A.Z. - Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung http://www.faz.net/s/homepage.html - one of the major Newspapers in Germany.

As part of their report, Noel took them to his "secret spot", although I believe entire PNG is "secret spot" in world standards. They have spent approx 2 weeks in Papua New Guinea and left for Thailand yesterday.

School Visit

During the filming work on Friday, we have dropped in at Porebada primary school outside of Port Moresby. School children were so excited about the team visit and even after the school bell rang, they kept posing for the camera. (Sorry for the disturbance...)

During the visit to the village, we have found out the shocking fact that the global warming has already affected the life of Papua New Guineans, not only at the remote Carteret Islands, but at the very shoreline of the capital Port Moresby as well !!

If this is caused by human being, we have to act now to stop this.

If the global warming is accelerated and further push the sea level up in an alarming speed, these innocent children - next generation of this planet- may not have a land to live.

French Guidebook for Papua New Guinea

We had a workshop in Port Moresby to meet with a French journalist who is making a country wide trip to write a guidebook of Papua New Guinea in French language for the first time.

For quite a long time, only Lonely Planet (in English) was available as a comprehensive tourist guide book for Papua New Guinea. We are grateful for the Lonely Planet for its publication, however, I believe a guide book in other language in which report is also done by their own country men will be much better.

I hope he will get good report & photos of Papua New Guinea and make a nice guidebook.

Another Memorial visit

Another memorial visit to PNG after many years, this time by the former diplomat of UK.
He has driven up the Highlands Highway from Lae and visited Mt Hagen show in 1970 - most of us were never born at that time !!
This time, he has covered most parts of the country during his 20 Nights trip in Papua New Guinea, namely Alotau, Misima, Losuia, Mt Hagen, Goroka, Madang, Kavieng, Rabaul, Hoskins & Port Moresby. Thank you Tom for your visit, we enjoyed your story and will all miss you !!

Red Sensation from PNG- Will Genia

Last Saturday, I have watched Super 14 game on TV- Queensland Reds vs. ACT Brambles.

While Brambles have hammered the Reds by 52-13 , we were stunned by dynamic attack of chocolate-skin, solid body scrum half of the Reds. He has scored all the 2 tries of Reds.

He is Will Genia, Australian-educated Papua New Guinean. He has represented Australia Under 20 in 2008 for IRB Junior World Cup in Wales.

Although he was injured on this game and will be away for next 5 months, hope one day he will play for Wallabies. It is a loss for Pukpuks (Rugby Union National Team of Papua New Guinea),

but I want to see first Papua New Guinean to win Webb Ellis Cup !!, even as part of Wallabies.

Memorial Visit

We have done a tour to Sogeri outside of Port Moresby with Australian guests who have brought up in PNG but left the country in 1970's before independence. We have dropped in at Sogeri Primary school where they have attended, probably 50+years ago. Teaches were surprised to hear the story of the past which they have never heard of !!
We were also delighted to see that they have made a memorial visit.

Morobe show, the oldest Festival in PNG

While Mt Hagen Show, Goroka show have been commercially promoted over the years, Morobe Show is the oldest organized Festival in the country which started in 1959.
It was started as Agricultural show, and still now it plays a major role in public awareness of the cultivations, crops, diseases which are important for agriculture.

Apart from being the oldest, with more industry support, Morobe Show is one of the most organized festivals and Tourists can enjoy the various attractions including the traditional Sing Sing groups which come from all over the country.

Effect of Global Warming in Papua New Guinea

Carteret Atoll (Islands) have attracted much attentions from all over the world for their rising water level problem related to Global Warming.
In Nov 2005, news have spread the world that the Atoll will gradually become uninhabitable, with an estimate of their total submersion by 2015 and the islander will become the world's first refugees from the effects of global warming, although the No-Electricity/No-Gas/No-Vehicle islanders have not contributed to the World Carbon emission at all.
World TV News/Documentary crew flocked to the remote islands ever since.

Thanks to the media coverages, the name "Carteret Atoll" has become quite common among the environmentalists, NGOs and government officers in charge of environment in the world.

At the same time, it is also a fact that the majority of the Papua New Guineans have never heard of the islands or their problem, partly because of the isolated location of the Atoll, partly because the world media has not reached to most parts of the country, and of course, negligence by the succesive government.

So What is happening to the rest of the Papua New Guinea ?

Photo is one of the Motuan Villages in Central Province near Port Moresby.

Motuan used to live on the post house on the water but many have decided to live on the land due to many reasons, some obviously related to water level/high tide problem.

A house was built at the far end of the village but later most of the other houses were relocated to the land side and only one was left. Now with the fear of the high water level and isolation, the owner left the house.... villages are gradually moving towards the shore and further to inland.

Cuscus the shy Forest Animal of New Guinea

Papua New Guinea has slightly fewer species of Mammals than Australia, which is more than 10 times in land mass.
Among all, I believe Cuscus is one of the cutest ones, but for local people, it is one of the tastiest meat...
Cuscus is marsupials family (family related to Kangaroo & Koalas), slow moving animal which lives high in the jungle of New Guinea.
It is a shy nocturnal (moving in the night) animal so difficult to spot in the nature, but there is a chance if you walk the trek or stay in the village.

Sad News

We have received very sad news that Maggie Wilson has passed away.
She was a prominent business woman in a male-dominated Highlands society of Papua New Guinea, particularly known as an owner of Haus Poroman Lodge.
Born as a daughter of Gold miner from Australia, she was a living-history of "First-Contact Era" of New Guinea Highlands, business woman, politician & owner of arguably one of the Best Lodges in the country.
Personally, I have stayed about 3 weeks and learnt Tok Pidgin at Haus Poroman when I first came to Papua New Guinea in 1995. Even now, many people tell me that my Tok Pidgin is Kange (Mt Hagen) style, mainly owe to the people of Kunguma village. After 14 years, I vividly remember the friendly smile of Maggie, family & staff who made me at home.
Apart from language, I have also learnt a lot from Maggie and staffs of Haus Poroman (name itself means "house of friends"), how best we can treat international visitor with a true Melanesian hospitality in a professional manner.

Maggie, please be assured that your initiative has been inherited to many people and passed onto next generation.

Haus Poroman Lodge has been closed since 2007 but hope one day re-opened, so that we can visit our “home away home.”
May her soul rest in peace...

Note : As an alternative, "Hotel Poroman" in Mt Hagen town is run by her family member.

Palm Sunday PNG Style

This is Palm Sunday and we have seen many people walking on a street of Port Moresby with Palm Leaves. In Papua New Guinea, 95% of population is Christian in different denominations.
Our boy was dressed and face-painted with Sepik-style and photographed in front of the Palm Tree, Palm Sunday PNG Style !!

Eco Tourism in Papua New Guinea

The word "Eco Tourism" is often used as commercial advertisement, political propaganda, community meeting agenda, etc... Yet many people don't really understand what it really is.
If you ask "what is Eco-Tourism ?" in Papua New Guinea, some people may say "it is a 5-star hotel !", while some say "no, it is guest house." , or "we hear the word every 5 years (at the election campaign) but never seen the real ones..............

If definition of Eco Tourism is something like this - a small scale sustainable tourism which enhances the conservation of natural environment, preservation of indigenous culture, beneficial to the local community and educational to the visitors, what Papua New Guinea offers at this moment is all Eco Tourism as it is.

There is no well-established Museum or Zoo in Papua New Guinea, but if you would like to visit a living culture, un-spoilt natural environment, we have them all here, existing well before the word "Eco-Tourism" was created.

We had 1 day PNG Tourism Seminar in Helsinki, Finland last week.

More than 30 eager people came from travel industry & media.

Look at the serious faces on the photo ! oh no, they are not "drunk", bit of "cool water" after a heated discussion !!

Back Home

Finally back home from Europe yesterday.

After 2 weeks of clod weather, warm & humid weather of PNG welcomed us.

I always like the moment we land and smell the green leaves, and feel the warm air, and kids smiling for nothing.

He was accompanied by his son Gunnar.

At grade 6, he is already taller than Emily !!

Visit Germany

We had one day break before ITB Berlin starts, so instead of sightseeing or shopping, we have decided to make use of the day and have visited a Tour Operator near Frankfurt.

Got on a Bus, Airplane & Train and , we finally arrived at small town of Niedernhausen.

Sepik Trip No.2 - Wagu Lake

Wagu lakes lies South-west of Ambunti, and is the gateway to Hunstein Range Wildlife Management area. 5 minutes from the Guest House, Lesser Bird of Paradise dances every morning. (Please see my bad photo....)

There is also Crocodile Farm where you can possibly jump in... no, just to see Crocodile feeding.

On the way to the Lake, there are lost of water birds around, including Eagles hunting for fishes.

Wagu Lake, only reachable by Sepik Canoe Safari is one of the "must see" in Upper Sepik area.

End of very challenging year

2008 was very challenging year for many people. World economy collapsed, fuel prices jumped up and now gone done; multimillion -companies are on the verge of bankruptcy.

People kill each other in the world and natural disaster hit many places- earthquake, flood, drought, global warming, etc...

Here in PNG was no exception. Hotel cost is forever going up (esp. Port Moresby), food cost jumped because of high fuel cost but never gone down after fuel prices gone down - why ?

Highland Highway was cut off by landslide (in April), King Tides washed away seaside Hotel, etc... etc....

But as long as we are healthy and alive, we know we will come back and overcome all the difficulties. Never give up and keep going , PNG ! Bright future is waiting for you.

Construction Boom

One of the key words symbolising the year 2008 in Papua New Guinea, particularly in Port Moresby was construction boom. There are lots of buildings are under construction - Hotel, Supermarket, Residential apartment, office building etc...

Despite the world economy collapse, the construction boom is still going on and sustaing the local economy.

Shrimp Plant

The heart-shaped bracts on these Acanthus family plants suggest a scale that looks like curved tail of the shrimp. The real flowers are tiny white ones on top of the "shrimp."
It is also called as Lollipop, as it may look like an candy.
You can see them in tropical jungle of Papua New Guinea, but more easily, they can be found in National Capital Botanical garden in Port Moresby.

Highest Peak of South Pacific - Mt Wilhelm

Mt Wilhelm rises up to 4,509m and is the highest peak in Papua New Guinea as well as South Pacific. Kegusugul, at the foot of Mt Wilhelm is accessible by Road from Goroka (approx 6 hours) and you start walking from there. Goroka is approx 1 hour flight from/to Port Moresby, the international gateway of the country.
The walk involves up and downs through the Highlands Rainforest, Grassland and Rocky Cliffs to the summit. Although the trip is challenging, with the help of friendly local guide and porter , it will give you an unforgettable experience.

You can also combine the trip with Sepik River Cruise to make it a complete adventure expedition in Papua New Guinea.
